I’ve been road testing products for over 25 years so as an experienced editor I know how to identify the best products out there. Over the past several years I decided to focus on learning everything I could about what was actually in these products and are they safe to use.
About 10 years ago, I had a health scare after my blood work showed toxic chemicals in my system. After several years of research, I’m now ready to share my knowledge with you as a clean-living lifestyle expert.
As a wellness enthusiast, I'm always on the lookout for ways to live a more holistic life. In today’s world, making informed choices about the products we use every day is more important than ever. Whether it's the food we eat or the personal care products we apply, understanding what goes into these items can significantly impact our health and well-being.
There are three apps I rely on to research my products are Think Dirty, Yuka, and EWG Healthy Living. Each one offers ratings on the toxicity levels of our everyday products. Keep reading to see the differences between these apps and how you can use them as a resource to make informed and healthier purchases.
Also, I hope you sign up for The Glow Girl Academy for cleaner, low-tox living where I will be sharing so much more information in an intimate and personalized environment. Here’s more info on the apps I recommend most…I usually compare between them to get the best information.
Think Dirty
Think Dirty is extremely useful for personal care products. It provides detailed information about ingredients, so you can understand their potential health impacts. They rate products on a scale from 0 to 10, with lower scores indicating safer options. This makes it so easy to quickly assess the safety of anything you’re considering buying. Plus, it has a barcode scanning feature, so you can scan products while shopping and get immediate safety information. It's great for making informed decisions on the spot!
Yuka
Yuka is a fantastic app that covers both food and personal care products. It gives you a detailed analysis and scores products from 0 to 100 based on their ingredients and nutritional value. It also has a barcode scanning feature (this is a free feature), so you can instantly get all the info you need while shopping, making it easier to choose healthier options right there and then. I love that if a product scores poorly, Yuka suggests healthier or safer alternatives. It's a great way to guide you towards better choices and promote a healthier lifestyle.
EWG Healthy Living
The EWG Healthy Living app is impressive with its wide range of safety information rating products such as personal care items, food, household cleaners, and more. They give detailed safety ratings, so you know exactly what you're getting. They offer a detailed product breakdown so you can see how certain toxins may affect your health. Healthy Living also has a barcode scanning feature so it’s easy to get all the product info right at your fingertips.
Should you go for the paid versions?
Free or paid? Here's the lowdown: the free versions give you the basics—ingredient lists, safety ratings, the works. They're great for dipping your toes in and seeing what the apps are all about. The paid versions offer some perks like more personalized recommendations, ad-free browsing, and access to a bigger database of products. I’d recommend road-testing all three and finding your favorite.
Why Use All Three Apps Together?
Using Think Dirty, Yuka, and EWG Healthy Living together helps to make the most informed decisions about the toxicity levels of our products. I use all three to get the most comprehensive reviews and can cross-check info to help me make the best shopping decisions. I suggest you start slow and conquer your existing products one area at a time. For example, check out your makeup bag first. Then follow up with your skincare.
