Who What Wear Feature - I'm 54, and These Are the Trends I Will and Won't Wear

November 5, 2019 Melissa Meyers
Melissa Leopard Dress.jpeg

Having the experience of knowing when to embrace certain style trends, and when not to, just comes down to being conscious of your own body type; what looks good on your shape and what makes you feel fabulous and confident. Over the years I’ve realized I can love and appreciate a look on someone else, but just because it looks great on a model or a friend doesn’t mean it’s right for me.

Who What Wear is my go-to, online fashion bible for all the latest and greatest in style, so I am always excited when they ask me for my point of view to publish on their website! Check out my latest featured post below, “I’m 54, and These Are the Trends I Will and Won’t Wear,” because fashion is not one look fits all…

Before moving to Los Angeles and launching my blog, The Glow Girl, I lived in New York City where I was the Founding Editor of an online fashion and lifestyle magazine. A large part of my job was to be on the hunt for the latest style and fashion trends and to share them with my audience. Experimenting with these trends and seeing so many come and go over the years has helped me develop a distinct style guide! I realize now that it’s important to only wear the trends that work for your style, body-type and taste. As a woman in my mid-50’s, it feels good to adopt the trends that make me feel confident when walking out the door, and to ignore flash-in-the-pan trends that don’t. Check out the trends I will and will not wear below!

WILL WEAR: Cropped, High-Waisted Jeans

Cropped jeans are always a good look as long as they are high-waisted to elongate your leg. They can be worn with all types of shoes from heels to sneakers, sandals, and booties.  I prefer ones that have stretch in them for comfort —not only are they on trend but they also hold in your tummy!

WILL WEAR: Animal Prints

I love animal prints and have been wearing them for years. They are super trendy right now but have always been a staple in my wardrobe. If you like them but want to be less bold, try wearing accessories like belts, bags and shoes that complement your existing wardrobe.

WILL WEAR: Boyfriend Blazers

Sporting an oversized boyfriend blazer is always in style—I’ve been wearing the same one for over 10 years! These blazers are nice investment pieces and make any outfit look a bit more sophisticated and buttoned-up. I love to wear mine with jeans and a t-shirt a la Anine Bing!

WILL WEAR: Feminine Dresses

I adore dresses that have feminine details like puffed sleeves and floral patterns. Paired with a nice bag, a dress with these details requires minimal accessories and always looks sophisticated and chic!

WILL WEAR: White Booties

Wearing white year-round from head to toe is here to stay and a great alternative to black. These white “cowboy-style” Sam Edelman booties are so versatile - I get more compliments on them than any other shoe in my closet! I like to wear them with dresses, skirts, and jeans, making them the perfect staple.

WON’T WEAR: Short Biker Leggings Paired with Blazers

I see mixing these two styles together as a passing trend! Keep the biker leggings for workouts only if you need to wear them. I am not a fan, as they cut off the thigh in a place that can make legs look shorter.

WON’T WEAR: Chunky Sneakers

These “ugly, dad-style sneakers” certainly made a comeback from the 90’s but I won’t be wearing them anytime soon! They can look unsophisticated and do nothing to help elongate the leg. I recently purchased a pair of Nike Cortez sneakers that capture the trend and are flattering and feminine!

WON’T WEAR: Short Crop Tops

The shorter crop tops work if you are under 30 and sporting a six-pack! An alternative to these tops is to wear one that is cropped right where the waist of your pants hits. I wear these tops with high-waisted jeans and sometimes even show just a sliver of skin.

WON’T WEAR: Tiny Sunglasses

These sunglasses are disproportionate to any adult face and can look silly! Plus, they offer very little sun protection for the eyes. I like sticking to classic aviators, cat-eye, and oversized sunnies!

WON’T WEAR: Neon Clothing

This trend is a flashback to the 90’s and was super popular at the spring 2019 fashion shows but to me it just looks tacky! If you want to capture this trend, I suggest wearing an accessory like a neon belt or shoes—or just try an electric colored mani for less of a commitment.

I hope you find this blog post helpful when choosing trends to adopt into your wardrobe!

xx Melissa

Who What Wear Feature: I'm 54 and Always Get Complimented on My Thick, Shiny Hair—Here Are My Secrets

October 23, 2019 Melissa Meyers
Who What Wear Hair Article

One of the questions I frequently receive is “How do you keep your hair so healthy and thick at 54?” While I do attribute my locks partially to genetics, I’ve found using specific high-quality products is key to maintaining a healthy head of hair. Just like any part of your beauty routine, it's important to be consistent about how you care for your strands. My hair has always been super important to me and I do whatever I can to maintain its overall health! So, I’m super excited to share my latest feature in Who What Wear, “I'm 54 and Always Get Complimented on My Thick, Shiny Hair—Here Are My Secrets!” Read on for more!

Who What Wear Hair Article

It takes a village to keep my hair in good shape. When you’re in your 50s, the change in hormones can wreak havoc on hair growth. I’ve tried and tested so many products over the past year—from natural shampoos and conditioners to safer heating tools to collagen drinks and other supplements with purported hair and health benefits. Below are my best secrets to maintaining healthy hair at any age.

The Cut & Color

Melissa Meyers Who What Wear

It all starts here! I go to Seama at L.A.'s famed Nine Zero One Salon for my cut and color. She's on the pricier side but is quite the perfectionist with hair. If you color your hair, I think it's most important to find someone you trust with the integrity and health of your hair. Find someone whose hair you admire in your area, and ask who they go to. Chances are you’ll be happy with the results!

Shampoo + Conditioner - Innersense’s Hydrating Cream Hairbath and Conditioner are two of the best hair products I’ve discovered recently. They are created with certified-organic plant ingredients and have an all-zero toxin rating on the Think Dirty app. Plus, my hair has never felt so clean and hydrated—even after one use! For a luxury brand, I’m also obsessed with Gloss Moderne’s Luxury Shampoo and Conditioner, and I like to switch between the two so my hair doesn’t get “bored” by using the same products.

SHOP Reverie, Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-In Nourishing Treatment.

SHOP Reverie, Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-In Nourishing Treatment.

Leave-in Conditioner - Reverie’s Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-In Conditioner. This is another clean hair product I recently incorporated into my haircare routine! Infused with coconut, olives, almonds, and other healthy extracts, Reverie’s nourishing treatment leaves hair feeling silky and smooth. I use it when my hair is feeling dry, which is quite often now that I live in L.A.

SHOP Bogavia The Weightless Hair Serum.

SHOP Bogavia The Weightless Hair Serum.

Heat Protectant Serum - Bogavia The Weightless Hair Serum. This heat protectant serum helps volumize and rehydrate the hair while protecting it against damage and breakage from styling tools. This clean, multi-use hair product has an incredible natural scent of Valencia vanilla and can also be used on dry hair.

Treatment Oil - Drybar’s 100 Proof Smoothing Oil. For added heat protection with shine, this treatment oil from Drybar helps damaged locks bind together again to prevent frizz and further damage. I like to use this product on the ends of my hair, and the brand's signature scent is incredible.

Texturizing Spray - R+Co’s TROPHY Shine + Texturizing Spray. This spray from R+Co adds the perfect amount of texture and shine. Plus, it can be used on all hair types. Using this product actually makes the hair appear thicker and adds instant volume. Apply it after drying to help you style or use it instead of hair spray.

Hairspray - Moroccanoil’s Luminous Hairspray. Moroccanoil's hair spray in the medium hold is perfect to use as the last step in your hair routine to achieve a flexible, lightweight hold for natural-looking styles. I love the signature scent, and I use this product as I’m stepping out the door for a little extra hold at the beginning of a long day or night out.

Dry Shampoo - Dry Shampoo by Ouai. When my hair is a bit dirty but I want to get in another day or two before washing it, Ouai's dry shampoo makes my hair feel and smell clean without leaving a white powder residue. I don't like to wash my hair more than three times a week, so I reach for this dry shampoo quite often.

The Tools

Blow Dryer - T3’s blow dryer, “The Cura.” This dryer has a built-in ion generator that smooths out the hair cuticle for soft, frizz-free results. I love that this dryer is lightweight and digitally controlled with three heat speeds and two speed settings. T3 has been my go-to dryer for over 10 years now, as I find it dries hair quickly with the least amount of heat damage.

Curling Iron - OGÉ’s 5-in-One Curling Iron & Conair’s Double Ceramic Curling Iron. I like to use a wand curling iron about three times a week to put loose waves in my hair after a blow-dry. It makes your hair look thicker, too. A few favorites include this ceramic iron from Conair in Rose or for a more luxury product, this below set from Ogé.

Tip: See my IGTV on how to get natural, loose beach waves in under five minutes with a wand curling iron. My easy method is less damaging to the hair.

The Supplements

Collagen drinks and dietary supplements are all the rage these days, and there are so many good ones to choose from to help with hair growth and maintenance. I have road-tested so many products over the past year, and these stand out.

Hair Supplement - Hush and Hush Deeply Rooted hair supplements. These contain 2500 micrograms of biotin, which is the gold standard for hair growth and maintenance. They also contain other important daily vitamins and supplements like A, C, D, zinc, and niacin. Plus, they specifically target thinning hair, giving it the regrowth boost it needs.

SHOP Hush and Hush, Deeply Rooted Supplement.

Collagen - SkinTē’s Collagen Sparkling Tea. These teas have become a staple in my fridge. Each can of refreshing bubbly tea contains herb-based minerals and vitamins with 3000 milligrams of collagen. Since drinking daily, I’ve noticed a difference in the quality of my skin, hair, and nails. I also love that it's only 20 calories per can and infused with all-natural ingredients. You can purchase the cans by the trio or by a subscription package to receive them monthly. Use promotion code GLOWGIRL30 for 30% off your order.

SHOP SkinTē, Collagen Sparkling Tea Variety Pack.

Collagen Water - Vital Proteins’ Collagen Water. My go-to drink after a workout. These delicious collagen waters all contain 10 grams of bovine collagen and three grams of sugar or less with no artificial flavors. The collagen is sourced from pasture-raised cows in Brazil, and drinking them regularly could help benefit the quality of your hair, skin, nails, and joints. With six key flavors, you are sure to find one you love. My fave is Strawberry-Lemon.

Collagen Powder - Primal Kitchen’s Collagen Fuel Supplement Powder. This mix is keto-certified, paleo-friendly, and sugar-free. Each serving contains 10 grams of type I and type III bovine collagen peptides, which may help support hair, skin, and nail regeneration. I love the chocolate coconut flavor, and I add this powder to my lattes or post-workout smoothies.

Overall, getting regular haircuts every two to three months, washing my hair two to three times a week, and using all the best products, supplements, and styling tools make all the difference for maintaining healthy hair. And if you color your hair, it’s important to get it done from a reputable hairdresser who will not over-bleach or -dye your hair.

I hope you try some of these products and incorporate my tips into your personal haircare routine to help get the luscious locks you always dreamed of.

Who What Wear Feature - A 54-Year-Old Shares 9 Beauty Products That Make Her Look 10 Years Younger

September 25, 2019 Melissa Meyers
IMG_1397.JPG

Excited to share that I’ve been featured AGAIN in Who What Wear this month—this time covering clean beauty products, a topic that is becoming more and more important to me! Read on to see the full article!

MelissaMeyers_WWW_CleanBeauty02.jpg

I find that as I approach my mid-50s, my skin and body are getting more and more sensitive to what I put on them. Over the past year, I’ve been making an effort to incorporate and use clean, safe beauty products in my life in order to reduce my exposure to toxic chemicals. In doing so, my allergies have improved, I feel mentally clearer and physically better, and I know exactly what I’m putting on my skin. I don't want to compromise on my health or the quality and performance of my beauty and skincare products, which is why I'm excited to share some amazing clean beauty products I use to help me look and feel 10 years younger.

Moisturizer

Ere Perez, Moringa All-Beauty Crème.

Ere Perez, Moringa All-Beauty Crème.

This classic daily moisturizer by Ere Perez, Moringa All-Beauty Crème, contains nutritious ingredients that just melt into the skin, soothing dryness and tired skin, and leaving my complexion glowing. I find it to be the perfect base for under makeup and use it as my first layer of hydration. Hero ingredients include moringa—known to accelerate skin cell renewal—apricot kernel oil to firm and tone, lemon balm for powerful antioxidants, and prickly pear, which is loaded with vitamin E for healthy skin! This brand is a recent discovery for me, and I'm obsessed not only with their overall skincare line but also with their makeup line.

Eye Cream

Dr. Barbara Sturm, Eye Cream.

Dr. Barbara Sturm, Eye Cream.

Barbara Sturm is the queen of clean skincare, offering up products that are proven to work to diminish signs of aging fine lines and wrinkles. She formulates all her products herself, and combines the power of science and natural ingredients. I love several of her products, but in particular the eye cream, which targets dark circles, bags and puffiness. I have a sensitive eye area, and have found this fragrance-free product to be super potent, gentle and effective! Since using this cream, I’ve noticed the bags under my eyes have calmed down significantly—our eyes tell our age, so it’s a great product to invest in if you want to take years off your face without actually going under the knife!

Face Serum

Versed, Hydration Station Booster with Hyaluronic Acid.

Versed, Hydration Station Booster with Hyaluronic Acid.

Versed is a newly launched, well-priced clean beauty brand created by one of Who What Wear's co-founders, Katherine Power. I've been road-testing several products within the line and have been regularly using this hyaluronic acid formula. This serum booster is so light and disappears into the skin effortlessly—I add it daily to my face moisturizer for an extra hydration boost. It gives my dry skin the extra love it needs to stay super moist throughout the day! Yes, please!

Face Oil

Olìe x Melissa Meyers, RoseGlow Drops Face Oil.

Olìe x Melissa Meyers, RoseGlow Drops Face Oil.

Natural face oils are my top beauty secret; I'm obsessed! My fave ones are by a small company called Olìe Biologique that specializes in natural face oils. Their oils are 100% pure and luxurious, and they contain the best botanical ingredients that are proven effective. I loved their rejuvenating face oil so much that I reached out the company (before oils were a thing) and contacted the founder to see if we could create a formula together. Flash-forward to the launch of the Olìe x Melissa Meyers face oil. They're currently sold out, but we're working on an exciting new formula with French marine algae launching this fall. Click here for five free samples!

Exfoliators

Goop, Goop Glow Microderm Instant Glow Exfoliator.

Goop, Goop Glow Microderm Instant Glow Exfoliator.

This exfoliator from Goop is a natural skincare product that literally polishes away any roughness and smooths uneven areas. This instant Microderm exfoliating treatment has been called a “powerful facial in a little jar,” and it’s comprised of natural ingredients and essential oils, micro-exfoliating minerals, and glycolic acid. It’s truly a dual-action product, offering the benefits of both physical and chemical exfoliation. The results for refreshed glowing skin are instant, and they offer a subscription option so that you can be sure to never run out!

BB Cream & SPF Combo

Coola, Organic Face SPF 30 Rosilliance BB+ Cream.

Coola, Organic Face SPF 30 Rosilliance BB+ Cream.

I wear this product from Coola every single day because it’s one of the best multitaskers I’ve found in natural beauty. It’s an amazing skin-perfecting moisturizer with light/sheer coverage that leaves your skin even-toned and dewy! It comes in three shades depending on your skin tone; I like to use the medium-deep shade for a sun-kissed glow. Coola’s eco-conscious formulas are locally sourced with a Farm to Face® philosophy and are scientifically advanced… This is something I can get behind; I use a variety of the brand’s sun protection products from head to toe.

Body Oil

KORA Organics, Noni Glow Body Oil.

KORA Organics, Noni Glow Body Oil.

Founded by wellness entrepreneur Miranda Kerr out of her passion for all things holistic and natural, KORA Organics offers some of the best-certified organic skincare products I’ve tested. I recently discovered the line and was blown away by how much I love the toxin-free products designed to safely enrich your skin. I have so many faves but for starters, the Allure Best in Beauty award-winning Noni Glow Body Oil is certainly one to try. This oil immediately absorbs into the skin and the scent is heavenly. I like to mix it in with my body moisturizer, and then finish with it on my legs and arms before heading out for youthful, glowy skin. I’m a huge fan of oils, an absolute staple for all-over moisture for both face and body.

Haircare

Innersense, Hydrating Cream Hairbath.

Innersense, Hydrating Cream Hairbath.

As we age, our hair changes texture and needs extra love. I’ve been on the search for clean haircare products that leave my hair looking and feeling its best, but are also sulfate- and silicon-free. Say hello to Innersense! All of the brand’s products have an amazing spa-fresh scent and contain certified-organic plant ingredients that deliver hydration, health, moisture, shine and protection.

Innersense, Travel-Sized Trio.

Innersense, Travel-Sized Trio.

I’m not the only one obsessed with the hydrating cream and conditioner, as both have won Allure’s Best in Beauty awards! Ingredients include certified organic monoi oil and aloe that strengthen the hair follicle, smooth cuticles, and control frizz. My hair looked super shiny and hydrated after the first use. They have travel-sized trios you so can try several of their products depending on your hair needs.

Gloss Moderne, Clean Luxury Shampoo.

Gloss Moderne, Clean Luxury Shampoo.

I also use and switch off with Gloss Moderne hair products, a minimalist, natural, luxury haircare collection made from the highest-quality and health-forward ingredients. The shampoo and conditioner are both amazing, and the subtle tropical scent is gorgeous! I love the way my hair looks and feels when using their products. Pricey but worth the investment!
